Macular degeneration is a common age related disorder affecting the retina. The macula is the central retina and it can deteriorate as a result of age, smoking and family history to the point where central vision is damaged. There are two types: the wet type is a more rapidly presenting change in vision, usually with distortion or a black central spot developing suddenly. This has now become treatable with injections into the eye known as intravitreal injections. The dry form is a slower progressive loss of central vision, which does not have any treatment options although limiting progression can be achieved using antioxidant medication in the form of vitamin supplements.
