    Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a multitude of diseases responsible for gradual loss of fine nerves within the optic nerves. The optic nerves carry the vision to the brain and without these fine nerves progressive loss of vision does occur. This usually starts with peripheral vision and takes a long time to present as a central visual loss. Peripheral vision is important in driving and negotiating in the environment and is only noted after significant loss of visual field has occurred. SLT is a novel treatment for glaucoma. SLT is known as selective laser trabeculoplasty and involves laser application into the eye to try and reduce intraocular pressure. SLT is used on its own or in conjunction with medication such as eye drops. SLT is relatively safe and can be repeated so that pressure can be maintained at the right level.
