    Diabetic Eye Disease

Diabetic eye disease is one of the more common causes of visual loss, particularly in young people. Diabetic eye disease takes the form of macular disease called diabetic maculopathy or proliferative disease. Both of these require treatment and laser can be used to protect the eye from progressive leaking and new vessel formation. Laser treatment is done in the rooms and may need to be repeated many times. This treatment is known as retinal photocoagulation. Without laser treatment vision of often lost and laser can protect progressive loss of vision although in some people it may be a loss of colour vision, contrast sensitivity and night vision.
